Emergency Services & Public Safety

Safe Streets. Strong Leadership.

Overview

The safety and well-being of every resident in North Caldwell is the guiding principle of the Prioritize North Caldwell campaign. The Borough has made significant safety improvements by investing in public safety without imposing an undue burden on taxpayers. These strategic upgrades reflect responsible governance, proactive planning, and a dedication to protecting our community.

Key Safety Investments

  • Automated License Plate Readers (ALPRs): Using a portion of a $1 million federal grant secured in collaboration with 16 Essex County municipalities, the Borough installed ALPR technology on signs and light poles. These devices automatically alert police to the presence of stolen vehicles and vehicles involved in other crimes, enabling rapid response by local and regional law enforcement.

  • Police Department Expansion and Upgrades: For the first time in over a decade, the Town Council has increased the size of the North Caldwell Police Department. In addition to expanding the force, the Council has also approved the purchase of two new police vehicles, safety equipment, and infrastructure upgrades to support modern policing needs.

  • Enhanced Emergency Communications Infrastructure: To address a 20-year gap in coverage, the Council supported initiatives to expand cellular infrastructure throughout the Borough. This upgrade can save lives by ensuring that both residents and emergency responders can communicate reliably in all areas of North Caldwell.

  • Traffic Safety and Pedestrian Protection:  In partnership with Essex County and the North Caldwell Board of Education, the Council funded the installation of a traffic signal at the busy intersection of Gould and Mountain Avenues. This important infrastructure upgrade enhances traffic flow and significantly improves safety for both pedestrians and vehicles near local schools.

  • Fire Department Modernization: Recognizing the importance of reliable emergency transportation, the Council approved the purchase of a new fire truck for the North Caldwell Fire Department—supporting the critical work of our volunteer responders.

Conclusion

The Prioritize North Caldwell team is proud of the progress made to enhance emergency services while maintaining low taxes. With proven leadership and a clear plan, the team will continue to deliver smart, community-focused investments that keep North Caldwell safe, responsive, and well-prepared.
